Police have arrested a man for the murder of a transgender woman in Dallas ten days ago.

Merci Richey, 22, was found dead in the parking lot of an apartment complex June 30.

Tenants told police they had heard gunfire about 5 a.m., but none of them called 911. Instead, a passerby found Richey unconscious in the parking lot.

Dallas Fire Rescue pronounced her dead at the scene.

Family and friends held a vigil for Mack Saturday outside Reverchon Community Center.

Thursday morning, Dallas police said the North Texas Fugitive Task Force had arrested Angelo Walker, 20, for her murder. Police have not said how Walker might have known Mack or released a motive.

The Human Rights Campaign says Mack was the 18th transgender person killed across the country in 2020. In 2019, a total of 27 transgender people were killed.

The group says more transgender people have been killed in Texas than any other state over the past five years.
