DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Plano police have arrested a 17 year old for shooting and killing a 16 year old at a house party Saturday night.

Marquell Ellis Jr. was killed when police say a group that had been kicked out of the party started shooting outside.

Bullets pierced the wall of the house and hit Ellis when his family said he was playing a video game. Ellis died at the hospital.

Monday afternoon, police announced the arrest of Kemond Smith, 17. He was arrested at his school, Forney Learning Academy. Tuesday morning, Smith was listed in the Collin County Jail on a charge of murder. His bond was set at $250,000.

Ellis' family was still planning services Tuesday. A GoFundMe page has raised more than $15,000.

"I had him so young, he kind of got to grow with me," says his dad, Marquell Ellis Sr. "He was more like a friend. You can't even imagine. That was my boy."

Ellis Sr. says he hopes people will remember his son for his dedication on the football team and determination to go to college than for being killed.

"Just go for what you want, doing your best, conquering and overachieving," he says. "Just know that it's not going to be easy. Keep going."

"It was fun to watch, to see how he was developing into a young man," Ellis Jr.'s football coach, Terry Gambill, said. "He was starting to understand what life was really about."

Gambill says Ellis had made the varsity team, but he played JV, too, to get more time on the field.
