DALLAS (KRLD) - An 11-year-old boy died Tuesday morning after he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Highway 161 in Irving.

Investigators say the boy was struck just before 7 a.m. when he were trying to cross the southbound lanes of the highway between Northgate and Rochelle Boulevard, presumably as he was walking to school.

Irving police officer James McLellan says it doesn't seem that weather was a factor in the accident.

"It was simply the case of somebody at seven o'clock in the morning roughly. . .It was still fairly dark outside, and so, for whatever reason was crossing the highway (when he was hit)," McLellan says.

The driver of the car did stop right away and try to help the victim. McLellan says it doesn't appear as though that person will face charges.

The boy attended school in the Irving ISD.

"This is a tragic loss for the entire Irving ISD community and the student's elementary school family. . .We've got counselors available at the school that are providing support to students and staff affected by today's tragedy," says Irving ISD spokeswoman Tierney Tinnin.
