DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - City leaders in Dallas are pledging a "thorough investigation" into the murder of a witness who testified at the trial of former police officer Amber Guyger. Joshua Brown was killed Friday.

Brown lived across the hall from Botham Jean. He testified that he heard gunshots and then saw Guyger crying in the hallway and talking on her phone.

Brown was killed outside a different apartment complex, near Cedar Springs and the Dallas North Tollway, Friday.

"There are no suspects or motives at this time," Chief Renee Hall wrote in a statement. "We are committed to solving this case and will work diligently to apprehend the individuals responsible for Brown’s death."

Brown's family has hired the same lawyer who represented Jean's family. Lee Merritt says he "cannot rule anything out," but no evidence has shown Brown's murder is connected to his testimony.

Merritt says Brown was shot and injured last year outside a strip club.

"My understanding is he was the intended target, and, so, there is something there we're learning more about," he says. "He had a personal beef that I'm just starting to learn about that caused him to be shot less than a year ago."

But Merritt says he would like an outside agency to investigate.

Mayor Eric Johnson says he wants anyone with information about the case to call police.

"I trust the Dallas Police Department will conduct a thorough investigation into the death of Joshua Brown. Until we know more about this incident, I encourage everyone to refrain from speculation," he wrote on Twitter. "Dallas will never be a city that tolerates acts of violence such as this."
