DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The Dallas Police department has had better than expected success in hiring and retaining officers but that comes with a price. Literally.

Dallas City Hall officials are scouring for money to pay them.

The city council received a memo saying the Police Department would be more than $5 million over budget because of an additional 77 officers on the payroll.

Last year, the city council okayed pay raises to help in recruiting and retention.

Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata says it's a "good thing that we are on our way back."  But Mata says the city must keep its promises.

Dallas city council member Jennifer Staubach Gates who chairs the finance committee says "we will find the money."
