DALLAS (KRLD) - Dallas police shot and killed a murder suspect at an apartment complex in Northeast Dallas Thursday morning. Police say they were investigating a separate murder and robbery at a diner about 15 miles away on South Lamar that occurred Wednesday.

Police say they had tracked the suspects in the robbery to an apartment complex on Skillman, north of 635. Around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, they say homicide detectives were serving a warrant and SWAT was running surveillance on a car that might have been involved.

"They had information that led them to this area," says Dallas Police Sgt. Warren Mitchell. "They observed this vehicle, they observed suspects going in and out of the vehicle."

Mitchell says one of those suspects started running. He says that suspect had a gun, so an officer fired, killing the suspect.

Mitchell says officers and SWAT spent the night at the complex to ensure everyone who was involved was captured. They were also interviewing tenants and others who knew the people involved.

"We never rule anything out, so everybody we have detained now are considered suspects," Mitchell says. "We'll weed out what we can, and whatever we can tie to anybody, we'll file those charges."

Tenants were never evacuated from the complex, but some who came home during the exchange say they were told to wait outside.

"It's pretty chill for the most part, but it's a high crime rate," one tenant said. "A lot of stuff happens, drug-infested. I'm moving. It's scary. What if I had sent my son out to take out the trash? His safety is more important than anything to me."
