This afternoon is the deadline for the Dallas Cowboys and star quarterback Dak Prescott to agree to a long-term contract.

If nothing is finalized by 3 p.m. Prescott will play this season on the "Franchise Tag", a designation which will guarantee the quarterback a salary of more than $31 million.

It also means the two sides cannot even resume negotiations until the season is over.

The team and Prescott's agent have not even talked since March.

At that point, Prescott refused a five-year offer averaging more than $34 million a year.

As it is, the $31 million Franchise Tag salary would be the biggest one-year payday in Cowboys history.
