DENTON (1080 KRLD) - A Denton Police officer who was shot and wounded in the line of duty is gradually improving.

Denton Police Chief Frank Dixon says Offier Urbano Rodriguez is in stable condition and showing some signs of improvement every day.

"I'm very happy to report that he is incrementally progressing as the days go on," Chief Dixon told the City Council this week. "He has a very significant challenge ahead....a long road to recovery. But considering where we were about six days ago it's nothing short of miraculous."

Officer Rodriguez was shot and wounded during a traffic stop last month. Two suspects have been arrested in the case. The investigation is being handled by the Texas Rangers.

Two restaurants in Denton held fund-raisers for Officer Rodriguez on Wednesday. They contributed 20 percent of their proceeds to a fund to help with his recovery.

Chief Dixon told the City Council he is grateful for the amount of support that Officer Rodriguez and the department have received from the community. "It has not gone un-noticed," he said. "I think it's unparalleled and unmatched if you look around the country...the level of support that we have received in the last week."
