DENTON (KRLD) - The Denton Police Department is giving away free gun locks at its headquarters on Hickory Street.

"We are partnering with Project Childsafe to hand out free gun locks to the community," said Khristen Jones with the Denton Police Department. "They're free, no questions asked, one per household - and anyone is welcome to come pick one up."

The new program is part of an effort to reduce accidental shootings and deaths. "We are just wanting to encourage people to have safe and proper storage of their firearms," Jones said. "We want to see a decrease in accidental firearms fatalities. If we protect one child that's more than enough for us."

The Denton County Sheriff's Office and the UNT Police Department are also working with Project Childsafe to provide free gun locks.
