At least one person is dead and a Parker County Sheriff's deputy remains in the hospital this morning after surgery to repair damage from multiple gunshot wounds.

He is one of two law enforcement officials wounded near Reno last night.

The deputy's condition is not believed to be life-threatening. He and a Reno police officer were shot at the beginning of an hours-long standoff at a home about two miles northeast of Reno.

When the gunfire started, the officers retreated to a defensive perimeter and began negotiating with the gunman whose mother had called saying he was threatening to shoot people at their home on Harris Road in rural Parker County.

The talks continued, but about 12:45 a.m. flames began coming from the roof.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and police went inside where a badly burned body was found.

It's believed the mother was able to escape early in the standoff.
