RICHARDSON (1080 KRLD) - Dallas-Fort Worth leads the nation in apartment construction, and no other metro area is even close.

According to a report by real estate analytics firm RealPage, more than 43,000 rental units are under construction in the DFW Area at this time.

"The next most active markets are Washington, DC, with about 29,000 units and Los Angeles with about 25,000 units," says Greg Willett, RealPage chief economist.

Willett says it's a trend that's been prevalent all decade long.

"Dallas-Fort Worth has consistently been building the most product," says Willett, "and we're at 140,000 units built so far in this cycle (since early 2010)."

The robust jobs market in North Texas is cited as one of the biggest factors in new apartment construction.

"Dallas-Fort Worth ranks alongside New York for producing the most jobs," Willett says, "and you need those jobs to create new households and generate demand for housing."=

The booming rental market, however, is not having an adverse effect on single-family home construction

Fort Worth is also number one or two for single-family home construction," Willett says.
