DALLAS (KRLD) - A new park is open in downtown Dallas. Pacific Plaza is the first of four new parks planned to meet the needs of the growing downtown residential population.

"In 1996, we had two hundred people living in the core of downtown. Now, we have 12,000...with a lot more residential under construction today. So we see that as being a big driver of these parks," said Downtown Dallas, Inc. President & CEO Kourtny Garrett.

Pacific Plaza covers nearly 4 acres on the eastern end of downtown Dallas that was previously a surface parking lot. "It's really this evolution of downtown from just a commercial office center to now one that's livable, where you're seeing more people on the streets enjoying all that downtown has to offer," said Garrett.

The park features swings, lawn space and a large pavilion. Developers also planted dozens of new trees on the site. The City of Dallas acquired the land in 2008 with help from the Trust for Public Land.

The group Parks for Downtown Dallas is working on plans for three more parks downtown: West End Square, Carpenter Park and Harwood Park.
