DENTON (1080 KRLD) - Some downtown Denton staples have been forced to shutter their storefronts, while others are working overtime to stay in business.

Ryan Adams, Deputy Director of Public Affairs with the City of Denton, says businesses are doing everything they can to keep the ball rolling during the pandemic.

"You will have seen some businesses that have suffered in different ways," Adams says. "Some businesses have indeed had to close temporarily, and perhaps a few have experienced a permanent closing."

Adams says the governor’s face mask order has presented another challenge for businesses ... but he says they’re working hard to overcome it and keep folks feeling safe.

On the same day Governor Abbott issued the mask order, Denton County Sheriff Tracy Murphree reportedly said he wouldn’t enforce it.

That caused some backlash, including an online petition to remove Murphree from office.

According to the Denton Record Chronicle,  Murphree says if the wording of Governor Abbott’s order is changed, he will re-evaluate enforcing masks.
