DALLAS (KRLD) - A man pretending to be a sheriff's deputy ripped off a woman in the Austin area.

Bastrop County Sheriff Maurice Cook says the man showed some type of badge when he went to a woman's door.

Cook says, "He told the victim that her account had been compromised. He told her she needed to call a certain number."

He says she called the number and someone told her to put money from her bank account on gift cards and prepaid debit cards. Next, the person on the phone told her to then give them those card numbers. Sheriff Cook says she lost $800 dollars.

The suspect in a car that looks like a police car is still on the run. Anyone with information is urged to call 911.
