FRISCO (1080 KRLD) - FC Dallas is celebrating its 25th season in Major League Soccer in 2020. The season begins at Toyota Stadium February 29, when FC Dallas hosts the Philadelphia Union.

"The fans' experience is not just about watching what goes on on the field. It's also about what happens in the stands," says Owner Dan Hunt. "We want to make sure they have a first-class experience that's different than a lot of other sports teams."

Last year, FC Dallas drew an average attendance of 14,842. The team was 13-12-9 and advanced to the playoffs, losing in the first round.

This year, the club's concessions vendor, Legends Hospitality, will serve a different dish for each visiting team. The "Away Stand" will be available to season ticket holders:

The Away Stand: Focused on bringing other cuisines into Toyota Stadium, The Away Stand will feature a rotating selection of menu items, inspired by FC Dallas’ opponent that day. These options will change game-by-game, so fans are encouraged to check back each matchday for new options. Already scheduled items for the opening games of the season include:

  • Lonestar Cheesesteak: Shaved sirloin, poblano chili, caramelized onions, provolone cheese and avocado crema on a freshly baked roll. (Philadelphia Union – February 29)
  • Beef Short Rib Poutine: Crispy thick cut fries, beef gravy, mozzarella cheese curds, braised short ribs, bell peppers and onions. (Montreal – March 7)
  • California Burger: Fresh ground beef, onion bacon jam, gruyere cheese, sliced avocado, leaf lettuce and tomatoes. (LAFC – April 4)
  • Texas Tachos: Tater tot nachos, queso, jalapeño cheddar sausage, bacon, bell peppers and onions, chipotle ketchup. (FC Dallas)
  • Chicken Fried Tri Tip Sandwich: Buttermilk fried tri tip, leaf lettuce, tomatoes, ancho chili mayo, pepper jack cheese. (FC Dallas)

"I try to give it some Texas flavor," Executive Chef Rex Turner says of Lonestar Cheesesteak, which will be served during the opening match against Philadelphia. "It's got shaved sirloin steak, caramelized poblanos, provoline cheese, then I put that avocado crema on there."

Chick-fil-A will be operating a stand available to all fans this year. Also available to all fans will be "Midfield Market" in Section 126. Midfield Market will serve vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free items:

  • Italian grinder with mortadella, salami, capicola ham, dijonnaise, olive relish on a low carb tortilla (Keto Friendly)
  • Loaded tabbouleh salad, cucumber, tomato, roasted bell peppers, feta cheese, bulgur wheat, parsley, lemon and olive oil (Vegetarian)
  • Roasted red pepper and jalapeño hummus with crispy pita bread (Vegan, Vegetarian)
  • Tomato and avocado salad with cilantro lime vinaigrette (Gluten Free, Vegan, Vegetarian)
  • Chef’s Choice Gluten-Free and Keto Desserts

FC Dallas introduced a "Crafty Cocktails" stand last season. This year, Crafty Cocktails has been expanded to four locations, Sections 109, 124, Heineken Red Star Club, and Winners Club:

  • Eastsider: Vodka, simple syrup, lemon juice and topped with a beer
  • Penalty Punch: Cherry limeade margarita made with Lunazul Tequila
  • Hat Trick: Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey with peach schnapps, sour mix, and topped with ginger beer

Other new selections will be available at concessions stands in different parts of the stadium:

  • Hot Cheetos Chili Pie: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, chili, cheese, elote and green onions. (Main Street Kitchen – Section112)
  • Pulled Pork Sliders: Slow-smoked pork shoulder, BBQ sauce, beer mustard coleslaw. (Bent Buckle BBQ – Section 125)

The menu in the Winners Club will change three times during the season:

  • All-American Hot Dog: All-beef hot dog wrapped in bacon, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and Lay’s potato chips.
  • Brisket Empanada: Empanada filled with brisket, refried beans, cheese and jalapeño ranch.
  • Burnt End Nachos: Crispy tortilla chips topped with brisket burnt ends, queso, pico de gallo, sour cream and jalapeños.
  • Chicken Cobb Salad Shaker: Fresh romaine hearts, smoked chicken, mixed cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, served with chipotle ranch.
  • Green Chile Chicken Enchilada Plate: Green chile chicken enchiladas with sour cream verde sauce, served with rice and beans.

Turner, the executive chef, says he looks forward to developing new ideas each season.

"For sure, you can just come get your beer and hot dog," he says. "Or you can come try the All-American Hot Dog, which is unbelievable. For me, there's nothing more American than wrapping something in bacon and toppin' it with some Lay's Potato Chips."

Turner says he communicates with chefs from other stadiums to compare notes on what new dishes are the most popular, and how he might take a dish that has succeeded in another city and localize the flavor.

"I try to think about what I like to eat and the flavors from Texas. I add my twist to that," he says. "The Montreal game, we'll have this amazing short rib poutine. It's got the cheese curds on there, but it's got braised short ribs on top with some beef gravy. Incredible dish. Creating new dishes, something different for our fans. Every single game, they can try something different. That's exciting for me."
