Fireworks led to fires in Plano over the weekend.

It started with a big snafu at Lavon Farms where the city's official fireworks show was underway. With only about six minutes left, a mortar shell exploded in its own tube.

The resulting chain reaction caused additional mortars to cook off and soon, the nearby field was on fire.

The flames spread fast and ended up charring several acres although no buildings were damaged and no one was hurt.

It took fire crews the better part of an hour to get the flames doused although they and the pyrotechnics crew spent the rest of the night out there to watch for flare-ups.

Investigators cannot say why that original shell misfired. Plano Fire-Rescue also had at least three other fires Saturday night linked to unauthorized fireworks.
