DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Five inmates in the Dallas County Jail have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Dallas County officials announced the first positive test on Wednesday, and followed that up Wednesday evening with four more positive tests.

"COVID spread through our jail," said Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. "We've had four more inmates who became feverish who were in the same pod with the inmate who tested positive. We have other individuals in the testing process."

Officials with the Sheriff's Office are not sure how the original inmate contracted the virus. All five of the inmates are receiving treatment.

"These people are sick," Judge Jenkins said. "They're being placed into medical care. Some of that care is in the jail."
