FOREST HILL (1080 KRLD) - Forest Hill police say a suspect stole one of their police cars and shot an officer Wednesday morning. They were responding to a call about a stolen car at a convenience store near Forest Hill Drive and I-20 about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the suspect started to drive off, but he stopped about a block away. Forest Hill police say the suspect got out of the car, shot an officer and then drove off in her patrol car.

Forest Hill police say the officer Naquirra Williams, was hit in the forearm. She was taken to JPS Hospital and should make a full recovery.

"I heard a lot of shots," one man said who lives nearby. "I had just gotten off work. My son came in and asked if I was all right. I said, 'Yeah, I'm all right. I heard those shots, too.'"

Police say that suspect then jumped into a Forest Hill police car and drove off. Officers chased the suspect north on Highway 287 toward Downtown Fort Worth.

The driver hit a concrete barrier on the side of the highway near the I-30 interchange. Police found the driver dead in the car. Wednesday morning, they were still investigating whether the suspect died in the crash or had committed suicide.

Wednesday afternoon, police were still investigating and had crime scene tape around the parking lot of the convenience store. One man says a family member was filling up his tank at the 7-Eleven when the shooting occurred.

"He called my son to tell him to come get him because they wouldn't let him leave with his car," he said, pointing the car sitting at a gas pump. "He saw everything. The gunman tried to put him in all of it when he tried to take his car."

Texas Rangers are working with Forest Hill and Fort Worth police on the investigation.
