AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - In the wake of the state’s second mass shooting in a month, Governor Abbott’s now pushing for legislation to expedite executions for mass murderers.

Abbott tweeted on Monday that they’re working on a legislative package right now and it would be a nice addition.

Rice University political scientist Mark Jones doesn’t expect the Governor to call a special session of the State Legislature to address this.

“I think more likely than not what the Governor is doing is he’s coming up with a policy proposal designed to show that he’s doing something about these massacres” said Jones.

Jones doesn’t think Abbott’s plan will achieve the desired outcome. “There’s some evidence that the threat of the death penalty will get some people to confess, but I don’t think there’s any evidence that the threat of the death penalty will keep an actual crime from occurring.”
