Texas Governor Greg Abbott will be giving Texas school districts more time to work out a safe plan that will allow students to return to classrooms.

Last week the state indicated that school districts had to offer online learning for up to three weeks after their normal start dates, so they could get their safety protocols worked out before bringing more students to campus.

If they stayed closed longer than that, they would lose state funding.

But the Governor tells a Houston TV station districts will now have that time extended.

Abbott says there should be an announcement soon from Mike Morath, the Commissioner of Education.

Teachers and parents have been demanding more flexibility about when to reopen classrooms as the coronavirus continues to spread across Texas.
