DALLAS (KRLD) - A grand jury in Denton has indicted a teenager for murder in the death of her infant, whose body was buried in a cemetery flower pot.

18-year-old Jazmin Lopez stands accused of murder and tampering with evidence.

Carrollton police say on February 4, 2019, Lopez gave birth to the child in far North Dallas, then suffocated the infant minutes later. Court papers say Lopez suffocated the infant, put her in a backpack and took her to the Perry Cemetery in Carrollton where the baby was buried in a flower pot. Several weeks later a groundskeeper found the body.

At first, Carrollton police had no idea who the infant's mother was, so they put out a call for public help. Jolene DeVito of Carrollton Police says Lopez turned herself in.

The Medical Examiner says the infant was alive when it was born, and did not have any medical problems.

Lopez is being held in the Denton County jail on a $250,000 bond.
