GRAND PRAIRIE (1080 KRLD) - Gateway Church in Grand Prairie donated body armor and helmets to police this weekend.

The church brought officers to the altar during weekend services to present them with 50 vests and 50 helmets.

"Anything we can do to help protect our officers is so important," says Grand Prairie Police Chief Steve Dye.

This weekend, a Houston police sergeant was shot and killed. Chris Brewster, 32, was killed while responding a report of a domestic disturbance.

Brewster was the 13th police officer killed in the line of duty this year in Texas. Dye says Brewster's death shows how dangerous law enforcement has become.

"It's a very challenging environment for law enforcement, but I think this also speaks to our community and the support they have for GPPD and how much they love and appreciate us," Dye says.

Gateway Church worked with the non-profit, Shield 616, to raise about $100,000 for the vests and helmets.
