IRVING (1080 KRLD) - A report of a man with at least one gun led to a lockdown and then evacuation of Austin Elementary School in Irving Thursday morning.

Irving Police say a parent called 911 about 7 a.m. to report a man parked in the lot who got out of his car with a rifle and a handgun.

"We believe the report was credible based off the emotion and description the person gave to us," says Irving Police Officer Robert Reeves. "The police department takes every report of this very seriously."

Reeves says Austin Elementary went on lockdown. Students and teachers then evacuated to Pierce Early Childhood School several blocks away.

"Our relationship with Irving ISD is critical, and we have a very good working relationship with each other," Reeves says.

Parents were allowed to pick their up their kids at Pierce.

"I can't explain it," one parent said. "I cannot even say it's a guy because if they see a guy outside they don't know, they might think it's the same person or a scary person. It's hard to explain to the kids."

Other students returned to Austin Elementary and classes resumed at 10 a.m.

"100 percent, we feel confident that person is not there now," Reeves says.

Reeves says police are looking at surveillance video to try to identify the man or his license plate number. He says the man was white with a beard. He was wearing a "camouflage vest."

Regardless of the man's intent, Reeves says he could still be charged because he was on school property, and schools are weapons-free areas.
