The University Interscholastic League has laid out strict guidelines for students participating in activities like fall sports and band in Texas.

Still, some parents are concerned about their children taking part in those extracurricular activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, some districts are looking at starting the school year with online-only learning.  The UIL announced last week that students learning under the virtual model may be involved in sports, band and other extracurriculars.

Dr. Troy Smurawa is the Director of Pediatrics and Sports Medicine at the Children's Health Andrews Institute. KRLD's Chris Sommer asked Dr. Smurawa for his thoughts on the UIL COVID-19 guidelines, and whether students are safer on the field than they would be in a classroom.
