GRAND PRAIRIE (1080 KRLD) - For the first time, a Texas city jail is offering inmates and their families the option for video visits.

For years, the only way for the families to visit a jailed loved one was to drive to the Grand Prairie jail only on Sunday afternoons and only during a two-hour window.

A private vendor is now supplying a system by which the inmates and families can have a video conversation no matter where the family lives, and the times are much for flexible.

But the cost bothers some families. Our news partner NBC 5 reports that the company's own website estimates the cost at $13 for a 20 minute visit. But the vendor acknowledges it got a lot of heat nation-wide so it has reduced the average cost now to about 15 cents a minute.
