DALLAS (KRLD) - A student at Lancaster High School has died from COVID-19. Jameela Dirrean-Emoni Barber was 17 years old.

"We will focus on celebrating the life of Jameela. She was an outstanding student that any school district would have been proud to have and educate," said Lancaster ISD Superintendent Dr. Elijah Granger.

Barber was a member of the National Honor Society and was involved with the JROTC program at Lancaster High School.

The district has sent a notice to parents encouraging them to talk with their children about the situation. The district is also making counselors available by phone.

"Her absence leaves us with fond memories, and the unexplainable sadness of a life gone too soon. While we will strive to move forward, this day in our district is marked by pain and despair," said Dr. Granger. "In our journey ahead, we are committed to ensuring that her memory lives on throughout our district."
