FORT WORTH (KRLD 1080) - MedStar in Fort Worth is equipping its vehicles with specialized "Stop the Bleed" kits. They contain medical supplies and instructions for treating trauma victims.

"There are pressure dressings, special gauze to absorb and stop bleeding, there's a tourniquet - and and there are instructions in how to use these devices to control bleeding," said Matt Zavadsky with MedStar.

The instructions are written so that even those without medical training can use the supplies to help people in a mass-casualty incident.

"The first thing that always comes to mind are active shooter incidents," Zavadsky said. "The arriving Medstar unit can pull out one of these duffel bags and hand out Stop the Bleed kits to bystanders who want to help."

MedStar will also have the kits available at large gatherings such as the Main Street Arts Festival and Mayfest.

MedStar is offering free training classes on how to use the kits. To schedule a class, contact MedStar at
