DALLAS (KRLD) - Almost two dozen cities in Texas spent the weekend trying to recover data, after a coordinated ransomware attack.

The Texas Department of Information Resources is working with the Cyber-response and Security Operations Center at A&M to figure out what happened and how to help those cities. It's not announcing what cities are affected.

The High Tech Texan Michael Garfield says the governor claims no files actually disappeared. But, he says, it appears to be one source that went after all 23 Texas cities with that ransomware.

Garfield says ransomware attacks are hitting a lot more often around the country. The US Conference of Mayors reported 22 ransomware attacks on city, county, and state governments this year.

Two cities in Florida paid a total of a million dollars in ransom to free up their files.
