PLANO (1080 KRLD) - A 45-year-old man from Plano who volunteered at his church as a worship leader has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

The Collin County District Attorney's Office says Everardo Raul Sanchez-Cabrera plead guilty to those charges.

Sanchez-Cabrera met an 11-year-old girl through his volunteer work at the church and contacted her on social media without her parents' knowledge. Prosecutors say that lasted for several months before Sanchez-Cabrera convinced the girl to meet him in person. They say he took her back to his home and sexually assaulted her.

The girl eventually told her parents about the attack and they notified authorities. Sanchez-Cabrera entered a plea of guilty and a judge assessed his punishment at 40 years in prison.

"We expect our church leaders, even volunteers, to be role-models and teachers; not predators," said Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis. "Those who prey on children must face the consequences."
