RICHARDSON (1080 KRLD) - Today in Richardson police are installing new Lock, Take and Hide signs in an effort to combat holiday crime.

It's no mystery why burglaries skyrocket during the holidays-- shoppers typically carry more cash, credit cards and gift cards now than at any other time of year.

Unattended packages left in parked cars also make for an easy target, and Sergeant Kevin Perlich with the Richardson Police Department says nobody is immune to car burglaries ... or burglaries of any kind, for that matter.

"Just as law-abiding folks are out there doing their shopping, you've got the criminal element out there doing their shopping just as much," Perlich said.

Fortunately, there are ways to keep yourself and your belongings safe.

Perlich suggests following the advice of the signs: lock your car, take your belongings with you or hide them from view. He also says not to wear expensive jewelry and to make a habit out of carrying less cash on your person. Always keep an eye on your wallet or purse and, most importantly, be aware.

"You have to keep and eye out," Perlich said. "Just be aware if anybody's watching you or following you."
