RICHARDON (1080 KRLD) - The City of Richardson is setting up a Volunteer Coordination Center to match people who need help dealing with storm damage to volunteers who are willing to help. That center will be at the Huffhines Recreation Center on North Plano Road starting today.

"We have had a tremendous outpouring of people wanting to help the people impacted by this tragedy," said Richardson Mayor Paul Voelker.

Volunteers should be prepared to help clear vegetation, remove debris and install tarps. People who need assistance or who want to volunteer can call 972-744-0900.

The City of Richardson will also bring in contractors to remove storm debris from public property and the public right-of-way on Friday. Those crews will not deal with commercial debris or hazardous waste, only storm-related debris. The city is asking people to keep storm debris separate from regular household trash. Homeowners are also being requested to separate clean vegetative debris from demolition debris or other items such as appliances.

Vehicles parked on neighborhood streets in the storm damage zone will need to be moved on Friday to make way for the over-sized trailers used for debris collection. The city is also requiring private crews hired to remove debris from private property to remove that material themselves, rather than placing it in the right of way.
