DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A member of the football team at Stephen F. Austin University is getting a visit from his team today has he recovers from a gunshot wound. Freshman LaCoryien Washington was shot in the head while leaving a party in Fort Worth last weekend.

"It's just kind of a miracle that he survived," said SFA Head Coach Colby Carthel. "He's on the road hopefully to recovery, he's undergone some surgeries".

Coach Carthel visited Washington at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth last weekend as soon as he learned of the shooting. "I wanted to get over there and see him and hug his mom and brother and be around his family," Carthel said. "It was good to be over there - and the shape that we found him in is a lot better than what you expected."

The SFA Lumberjacks have a game on Saturday against the Abilene Christian University Wildcats in Abilene. "We'll play Saturday afternoon, but Friday going up there we're taking the team bus by the hospital and we're going to go by and see him as a team," Coach Carthel said.

The shooting is being investigated by the Fort Worth Police Department.
