AUSTIN (KRLD) - The Texas Democratic Party announced Tuesday that the U.S. House of Representatives Speaker, Nancy Pelosi will be a special guest at their online state convention next week. The virtual convention is scheduled to begin Monday, June 1, and runs through Saturday, June 6. Speaker Pelosi is scheduled to address the online convention on Friday evening.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement:

“It is an honor to join Democrats from the Lone Star State and share my message of belief, hope, and opportunity during the Texas Democratic Convention. As I’ve stated previously, Texas is ground zero for this election. The big and bold work happening at the Texas Democratic Party is why we will strengthen our House Democratic Majority, elect more Democrats across the state, and elect a Democratic President of the United States, Joe Biden, in November.”

Hosting the largest virtual state convention in the country, The Texas Democratic Convention will bring together Democrats from around the state to select delegates to send to the Democratic National Convention, vote on our party platform and choose party leadership.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“We are proud to have Speaker Pelosi as our Special Guest during the Texas Democratic Convention. The Speaker’s leadership amidst the challenges of the Trump Administration has been invaluable. Her accomplishments in the Congress of the United States -- from passing the Affordable Care Act to advancing the priorities of our children and families -- and her dedication to public service have inspired generations of women to run for office and continue her legacy of fighting For The People.”

The Texas Republican Party Convention, originally scheduled to take place from May 14-16, was rescheduled due to the pandemic to July 16-18 in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Party Chairman James Dickey says they’re still planning on hosting an in-person convention despite the coronavirus pandemic. “We're seven weeks away and I'm very excited about the example that we’ll set, leading the way safely for Texans to be able to get back to real life.”

Dickey says he expects the TX GOP Convention to look quite different with about half the usual crowd. “We are of course, taking the steps necessary to make sure that we have our gathering and have it safely. So that includes being a lot more spaced out than we have in the past. That includes a lot of hand sanitizer stations and encouragement for those who choose to wear masks for their own sake or for other sake. And of course, we always have encouraged anyone who feels ill that not to be out in public.”
