DALLAS (KRLD) - Republican Chip Roy from the Hill Country demanded roll call votes on dozens of amendments to a trillion dollar spending bill overnight, keeping the house in session until four this morning.

SMU political scientist Cal Jillson says a lot of people are calling Roy, who recently stalled a 19 billion disaster relief bill, a grandstander.  "This is very reminiscent of the early Ted Cruz, five or six years ago when Cruz forced a government shutdown on appropriations bills.  This will get you a lot of attention, much of it negative."

He says it's possible it will draw a higher quality challenger for Roy's re-election a year from now. Former State senator Wendy Davis is rumored to be interested.

Jillson says Roy claimed he was protesting spending and the deficit in Washington while saying they're not spending enough on the border. "When he talks about deficits,  he wants to blame them on the majority House Democrats, rather than on the Trump administration and his tax cuts."
