AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - The mad-dash to register voters in time for the 2020 election has led to a new benchmark total. The eight-percent growth over the past year brings the latest total over 16-million.

Charlie Bonner of the non-profit voter registration group MoveTexas.org says there’s an evolution going on in the State’s voter rolls.

“We’re seeing the vast majority of this growth actually in the metropolitan areas: Harris County, Tarrant County, Travis County. And we know that the folks moving there, who are making up these communities are younger…more diverse” said Bonner.

The 16-million Texans registered to vote also marks an eight-percent jump over the past year.

Bonner says, “The voter registration numbers maybe for the first time ever are outpacing growth…population growth. So these are folks that already live here and are getting registered, many for the first time.” During the same period of time the state grew by just five percent.

February 3, 2020 is the last day to register to vote for the March 3, 2020 election.

According to The Secretary of State’s web site, VoteTexas.gov your voter registration application must be received in the Voter Registrar’s office or postmarked at least 30 days before an election for you to be eligible to vote in that election.
