DENTON (1080 KRLD) - A University of North Texas staff member has resigned after a racial slur was used last night during a panel discussion on Hate on Campus.

UNT President Neal Smatresk is now saying UNT Assistant General Counsel Caitlin Sewell has submitted her resignation, effective immediately.

Smatresk says they are very aware of the impact her comments have had on the community.

Smatresk says that while Sewell was trying to make a point about first amendment speech...the references she used are never condoned.

UNT councilors are available for students, faculty and staff.

The UNT Student Government Association called the slur unacceptable and demanded action after Sewell's comments.
