DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Dallas' senior centers have been closed to slow the spread of coronavirus, and this week, employees with the city's parks and recreation department are going to seniors' homes with care packages.

"We miss our seniors. They're the reason we work every day," says Janet Sharpless, who works in the senior program division.

Sharpless and other employees will deliver more than a thousand care packages this week. They have hand sanitizer, snacks, activity books and other items.

"They're elated to see us, and we're elated to see them," she says. "We're seeing that they're doing all right. Some of our seniors are out exercising and practicing things they've learned at the rec center, so that makes it even better."

Each of the five groups is using a DART van to deliver the bags. Sharpless says DART also provided some of the items included in the bags.

She says the delivery of the bags aims to give seniors a chance for social interaction they might have lost because the centers are closed.

"Now, when they come back, our minds are thinking differently," Sharpless says. "We know we may not see them the next day, so we're going to pour everything we've got into our seniors every day we see them."
