DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Amazon has expanded "Prime Day" to two days this year. The company says it is offering discounts on more than a million items, and it sold more than 100 million items on Prime Day last year.

In Texas, Amazon has nine fulfillment centers, including three in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The distribution center in Coppell, north of DFW Airport, covers one million square feet.

Two thousand people work at the fulfillment center in Coppell. Amazon says it has 13,000 employees in North Texas.

In Coppell, robots receive orders and pull items from shelves. The robots deliver merchandise to employees who pack them together to be shipped.

"With the efficiency of the robotics technology, a customer can click, 'Buy,' and the amount of time when that item becomes available has significantly shortened," says Amazon's Brenda Alfred.

Alfred says popular items will be stored in several different places in the warehouse. That, she says, prevents a "traffic jam" of too many robots going to one place to fulfill an order.

"That allows us to be able to have everything from a-to-z, as we like to say, so customers have the broadest selection to pick from," Alfred says. "We can meet their needs."

Amazon says 125,000 people work at 75 fulfillment centers across the country.
