WEATHERFORD (1080 KRLD) - Two people are facing criminal charges in Parker County in connection with the death of a dog.

The Parker County Sheriff's Office says 39-year-old Anthony Leigh West of Weatherford had abandoned his dog at a nearby farm because it was causing damage at the trailer park where he lived.

They say a second person began caring for the animal, but it was killed by 25-year-old Kyle Rufus Childers of Weatherford.

The person caring for the dog told investigators that Childers dragged the dog - then broke its neck and put its body in a dumpster. That witness told investigators that Childers had said the dog "was bothering him".

"This was an atrocious act," said Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler, "as bad as we have ever seen, This poor dog was first abandoned by its owner and ultimately met a gruesome death by the violent hands of another. He only knew love for a brief moment though a stranger who tried to care. Even that was stripped away from him when the suspect broke this dog’s neck, displaying a blatant disrespect for the life of a beautiful creature."

The dog's original owner, Anthony West, was arrested this week on a charge of cruelty to non-livestock animals - abandonment. Deputies are still searching for Childers. He's charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals causing death.
