PLANO (1080 KRLD) - Plano ISD plans to tighten security at its middle and high schools by randomly searching students for weapons.

The district hopes these searches will keep kids from bringing any weapons to school. They'll use walk-through metal detectors and wands.

Groups of students will be selected at random to be searched. They'll often go by classroom or by area of the building.

Plano ISD promises the searches will be truly random, and they also won't be announced beforehand.

Several school shootings this year, including the one at Santa Fe High School outside of Houston.

North Texas school districts have been tightening security and putting more focus on mental health initiatives.
