A couple who had been married for over 50 years died of the novel coronavirus.

Today reported that the couple died minutes apart from the deadly virus while holding hands until their last breath.

Jerry Austin Williamson and his wife Frances Jewel Bond Williamson both died at the age of 72 on April 1 at a hospital in Mississippi. Pastor Rick Clark of North Long Beach Baptist Church oversaw the funeral, which was streamed live on Facebook.

Pastor Clark shared that the couple got the virus on a recent cruise. Frances was put on a ventilator first, which her husband Jerry said he was "heartbroken" about, before he himself got very sick.

"They lived their life together, and they entered into the next life together," Clark said.

While sharing stories about the couple, Clark explained how he and Jerry had a conversation about Frances going on a ventilator, during which Jerry told the pastor he was scared to death.

In the past, the couple had gone on cruises and returned with minor illnesses, so they weren't worried after their last trip. Clark did not say where the couple had traveled.

According to the couple's obituary, Jerry served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired public works supervisor at the U.S. Naval Home in Gulfport, Mississippi. Over Jerry's casket was an American flag in honor of his service. Before retiring, Frances was a phlebotomist for many years. The couple was both members of North Long Beach Baptist Church.
