BEDFORD (1080 KRLD) - A recall effort is underway to remove Bedford Mayor Jim Griffin.

"Save Bedford Texas" has started the process which requires nearly 1,600 petition signatures by the middle of next month.

Tom Burnett with the group says they are upset about Griffin's support for more apartment zoning in Bedford and police and fire department hiring issues.

"We know that our staffing levels have been at a minimum. Some of the fire trucks those guys are using are 25-30 years old," he says.

Griffin has been mayor for about seven years, and says he's disappointed about the recall effort. He says the idea that he is anti police or fire is ridiculous.

"I actually lobbied for more police and fire in the last budget, but the council didn't want to raise taxes any higher. I have always been pro police and fire," Griffin says.

If the petition is successful, a recall election would be held next May.
