DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The National Park Service needs your help in keeping U.S. Highway 66, or Route 66 alive.

It was once known as "America's Mother Road."

It starts in Chicago and ends in Santa Monica, California. In between, it goes through Amarillo, Texas.

Kaisa Barthuli with the National Park Service says they are taking grant applications until April 12th.

Barthuli says, "Folks can apply for funds to restore vintage gas stations, or motel or cafe." She says about 85 percent of the route is still driveable.

Barthuli says, "The National Park Service presence is legislatively scheduled to sunset this September. The grant program will also go away."

But, there is legislation in Congress to permanently designate Route 66 as a National Park Service National Historic Trail. This would give permanent federal and national recognition of Route 66.
