ROWLETT (1080 KRLD) - Police in Rowlett arrested a 16-year-old after they say he made threats on Snapchat to shoot up Rowlett High School.

Students at Rowlett High School saw the threatening messages last week. The teenager was arrested over the weekend.

Investigators and parents are praising Rowlett High students, who did the right thing by reporting the threats directly to their principal. The school district also has an app that lets students report threats anonymously, and talk to administrators in real time.

Parents say it feels good to know they can trust their kids to do the right thing, and know when to do it.

Rowlett police say it’s unlikely the 16-year-old suspect actually had access to guns, but any reason for sending those threats is still unclear.

The teen faces a misdemeanor charge for threatening the use of a firearm.
