DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - It's been nearly half a century of family fun and memories, but Sandy Lake Amusement Park has come to an end.

Park owners announced on Facebook yesterday they've sold the land, and the park has now closed.

Sandy Lake was little more than a putt putt course when its owners discovered it completely by accident in 1970, after taking a wrong turn. They added more rides and picnic space, and it became a destination.

Over the years, Sandy Lake provided many students their first job. Special life moments and celebrations happened there. And every year, the park's well known Fun Fest drew in thousands of middle school students.

In the Facebook post announcing their closing, park owners say, "If the park’s legacy is leaving most people with golden memories or pleasant thoughts then the park has done its job."

The land was bought by Sandy Lake's neighbor Southwest Landscaping. They've promised to preserve it as a space for trees and wildlife to flourish.
