DALLAS (KRLD) - A new study shows disease-carrying ticks are spreading across the United States, and popping up in new places in Texas.

"A tick is the ultimate parasite, closely related to spiders, so it has eight legs. It's an arthropod, related to a spider, that is an absolute parasite, and wants to feed on blood," says Nate Nieto, Associate Professor of Microbiology at Northern Arizona University, and author of the study.

The study finds ticks have spread to 83 counties in 24 states, where they have never before been detected.

"We were able to use citizen science. Normal people collect ticks and then send them to us in order to identify what the real distribution of ticks and tick-borne diseases are, throughout North America."

The study's samples show ticks are born carrying infections such as Lyme Disease.
