Study Shows Men, Women Have Different Priorities At Work

DENTON (1080 KRLD) - Texas Woman's University has completed a study on the differences between the priorities of men and women in the workplace.

The study shows men focus more on salary, while women are more likely to prioritize work flexibility.

"The thing women wanted the most was flexible time off and then equal pay and then health insurance," says Pushkala Raman, a marketing professor at Texas Woman's University.

Raman says women are also more likely to feel "micro-managed" in the workplace and less likely to aggressively pursue promotions.

She says men apply for more jobs because they are less likely to worry they will be seen as unqualified. Raman says women frequently have less confidence and will not apply for a job unless they meet every requirement listed.

"There are still problems, and I don't think it's going to change overnight," she says. "This is going to take decades to change because it's a mindset."​

Raman says women are also less likely to make connections that can help them pursue other opportunities.

"Women need to put themselves out there to have a seat at the table," she says. "Unless we step up, it's not going to happen."

Raman sat on a panel hosted by the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce with the director of talent management at Lhoist North America, a construction supply company based in Fort Worth, and the CEO of Mirus3, a consulting firm in Fort Worth.
