DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is giving a Dallas County death row inmate another chance.

Steven Long was sentenced to death for the May 2005 sexual assault and murder of an 11-year old girl.

Long killed and stuffed the body of Kaitlyn Briana Smith into a trash bag then hid her under a trailer home. The girl had been at a sleep over when she was taken from the trailer.

Long claimed in his confession that he had an alter ego he called "pretty boy," and that was who actually attacked the girl.

Last year the Texas Court of Criminal appeals stayed the execution after a similar case raised concerns with the U.S. Supreme Court.

Today's ruling sends the case back to the trial court to decide whether Long is indeed below the intellectual level for execution, and for a recommendation to the Court of Criminal appeals.
