DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A college student from Texas has been sentenced to prison after he was caught attempting to join the terrorist group ISIS.

A federal judge in Houston sentenced Asher Abid Khan to 18 months in prison, followed by 5 years probation. Officials say the 23-year-old University of Houston engineering student admitted that he and a former high school classmate plotted to travel to Syria to join the terrorist insurgency.

Khan backed out, but the other man went through with it and died fighting for ISIS.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Khan is the sixth Texan to plead guilty in such a case.

Three others are awaiting trial, including suspects in Dallas and Plano.
