PLANO (KRLD) - Heat-related illnesses are keeping emergency room doctors busy in Texas. Those feeling sick from the heat may feel tired or even faint.

Dr. Glenn Hardesty is an emergency room doctor at Texas Health Plano. He says many people are coming in with heat exhaustion or even worse, heat stroke.

"They may not be fully aware of what's going on in their surroundings. Also, they've lost their ability to sweat," Dr. Hardesty says

He says water and shade is a must. He also says certain medications can put someone at a greater risk for heat stroke.

"If you find someone with a heat-related illness, don't immerse them in cold water.  Instead, give them cold ice packs or a cold sheet with cold water on it to cool them down. Allow a fan to blow over them.  If they have an altered mental status or confusion, bring them to the emergency room."
